It’s that time of year again, when the trees are shedding and our lawns become cluttered with fallen leaves. Perhaps you find yourself wondering if there is something interesting that you can do with the fallen leaves, beyond just the typical bagging them up and hoping that the yard waste collectors will take away all of your leaf bags. Below you will find a list of some things that you can do with your fallen leaves. Perhaps some of these ideas will benefit your fall lawn care routine, or at least inspire you to be creative in your own way. Mulch your fallen leaves. Mulch can be used throughout your flower beds, as a layer of mulch can add a protective covering from winter’s wet, cold days. This layer can protect your more fragile flowers and shrubs. Furthermore, the fallen leaves are full of nutrients that can be beneficial for your other plants. Make your own compost. Fallen leaves can be a great beginning to any compost pile. Place fallen leaves in a container where they will be undisturbed from winter’s harsh elements. As the leaves decompose, mix them with other composting items, in order to create a rich addition to any soil for future plantings.
Decorate with the fallen leaves. Some of the fallen leaves are beautiful in color and shape. Collect the prettiest leaves to use as part of a decoration for your dining room table, your buffet area, your fireplace mantle, or anywhere else that can use a spice of Fall color. Stuff leaves into old clothes to make a memorable scarecrow. This can be a very fun activity for anyone. A pair of old jeans and a flannel shirt can “come to life” with the stuffing of fallen leaves. Use your scarecrow to scare birds away from your Fall garden or to spook the neighborhood kids. Use fallen leaves for craft projects. Beautifully colored leaves can be used with glitter and glue to create attractive cards, decorations, or wreaths for your doors. The leaves could also be used to make colorful stained-glass window art or sun catchers. Leaf art can be used for drawings or doodles, too. Any of these seasonal creations can make your Fall a unique, creative addition for your personal surroundings. The season of Autumn is a special time of year. Instead of dreading the sight of fallen leaves along the surface of your lawn, think about the possibilities of things and activities that you can do with them. The ideas are countless - however, you may find that you still need to bag and dispose of a lot of the leaves!
